The Unified Model & Evolution of Active Galaxies: Implications from a Spectropolarimetric Study

چکیده

We extend the analysis presented in Tran (2001) of a spectropolarimetric survey of the CfA and 12μm samples of Seyfert 2 galaxies (S2s). We confirm that HBLR S2s tend to have hotter circumnuclear dust temperatures, show mid-IR spectra more characteristic of S1 galaxies, and are intrinsically more luminous than non-HBLR S2s. The level of obscuration and circumnuclear star formation, however, appear to be similar between HBLR and non-HBLR S2 galaxies, based on an examination of various observational indicators. HBLR S2s, on average, share many similar large-scale, presumably isotropic, characteristics with Seyfert 1 galaxies (S1s), as would be expected if the unified model is correct, while non-HBLR S2s generally do not. The active nuclear engines of non-HBLR S2s then, appear to be truly weaker than HBLR S2s, which in turn, are fully consistent with being S1s viewed from another direction. There is also evidence that the fraction of detected HBLR increases with radio power of the AGN. Thus, not all Seyfert 2 galaxies may be intrinsically similar in nature, and we speculate that evolutionary processes may be at work. AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Seyfert 2 Galaxies with Spectropolarimetric Observations

We present a compilation of radio, infrared, optical and hard X-ray (2-10kev) data for a sample of 90 Seyfert 2 galaxies(Sy2s) with spectropolarimetric observations (41 Sy2s with detection of polarized broad lines (PBL) and 49 without PBL). Compared to Sy2s without PBL, Sy2s with PBL tend to be earlier-type spirals, and show warmer mid-infrared color and significant excess of emissions (includi...

The Unified model and the Seyfert 2 infrared dichotomy 3

An optical spectropolarimetric study has shown that the detectability of polarised broad Hα in Seyfert 2 galaxies is correlated to the IRAS f 60 /f 25 flux ratio where only those Seyfert 2s with " warm " IRAS colours show polarised broad line emission. It was suggested that those Seyfert 2s with " cool " IRAS colours have highly inclined tori which obscure the broad line scattering screen. I pr...

Active Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III: from quasars to radio galaxies?

In this third of a series of papers concerning active galaxies in the FIRST and Sloan Digital Sky Surveys, we analyze the spectroscopic and radio properties of a sample of narrow-line Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), broad-line Seyfert I galaxies, and Quasars in the local universe in order to investigate the dependence of their activity on the mass, spin and accretion rates of the supermassive bla...

Cosmological Evolution of Extragalactic Sources in the Infrared and Contributions to the Background Radiation

Infrared surveys provide essential insights on galaxy evolution. If near-IR studies suggest mild evolution of stellar populations with cosmic time, indications of a substantial evolution have been seen in the far-IR, although the available information is largely insufficient to delineate precise evolutionary properties. A consistent picture encompassing all the currently available data may be o...
